BLACKSMITH SPECIALTY COFFEE CHOSEN FOR BEST SMALL BUSINESS

Blacksmith Specialty Coffee in Mt Gravatt East is Bonner’s small business of the year, Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta announced today.

“In the spirit of supporting our local small businesses this Christmas, I recently put out a call for people to nominate one small business in their area that they love and to tell me why,” Mr Vasta said.

“It was great to receive so many messages of support for local businesses, and one stood out above the rest.”

Mt Gravatt East local Gemma Blaney picked Blacksmith as her favourite local business for its friendly staff and affordable and delicious food and coffee.

“Blacksmith has really livened up the street in which they’re located and I think this is great for the local community,” Ms Blaney said.

Ms Blaney received a $150 voucher from Mr Vasta to spend locally this Christmas.

“Thanks to everyone who sent in a nomination in support of their favourite local small business,” Mr Vasta said.

“I can’t wait to drop by Blacksmith for a visit and to meet the wonderful staff who work there.”

“Don’t forget to shop local this holiday season, your support makes all the difference.”

BONNER SENIORS’ EXPO DRAWS HUGE CROWD

The inaugural Bonner Seniors’ Expo hosted yesterday by Federal Member Ross Vasta MP was a huge success, with over 300 locals from across the electorate attending and 55 stallholders participating on the day.

“I’m proud to support our valuable local seniors and help them find out what services they can access in the community and how,” Mr Vasta said.

“So many people have told me how much they’re enjoying the Expo and how much useful information they’re getting out of it. They’ve told me they’re hoping it becomes a regular event and I’m definitely looking at bringing it back even bigger and better next year!”

Lota residents Sydney and Carol Lawrence thanked Mr Vasta for holding the Expo and said the local area needed an event like it.

“It’s drawn some great crowds and hopefully it can become a feature event for the community,” Mr Lawrence said.

“We’ve discovered a lot of new things today that we wouldn’t have known about otherwise.”

Barry Tewes from Upper Mt Gravatt said he’d recently gotten on the pension, and had come along to the Expo to find out what was out there for him.

“I’ve discovered lots of things I didn’t know about and found out about some good activities. This is a great event that deserves to grow bigger next year. I hope it does,” Mr Tewes said.

There were several informative talks held throughout the day and information stalls run by local activity groups.

“It’s great to have all these different groups and organisations under the one roof for people to discover,” Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed committee member Bart McKnight said.

“This event will really benefit the people coming along today.”

Past President of the Lions Club of Brisbane MacGregor Kathy McCarthy said it was an excellent event with a great turnout.

“It was so good of Ross to organise it. There are so many stallholders here, and there’s such a good variety of stallholders too,” Mrs McCarthy said.

She encouraged seniors to attend their MacGregor Lions Health and Wellbeing Expo to be held in Mt Gravatt next March.

CEO of Tyack Health, Joel Tyack, spoke on how people can stay healthy and active in their older years.

“I think the Expo is a fantastic initiative. I can tell from people’s enthusiasm that they’re really enjoying it,” Mr Tyack said.

“It’s a great way for people to get out and about and enjoy themselves.”

Sailability Bayside volunteer Geoff Grace said the Expo would help people know what was available in their local area.

“It was great of Ross to set this up and bring so many local organisations and businesses together at one event for people to find,” Mr Grace said.

Mr Vasta said he hoped the Expo had helped and entertained everyone who attended, and encouraged attendees to contact his office to share their feedback with him.

IONA and Wynnum Vikings Join Fight to Fix Lindum Crossing

IONA College and Wynnum Vikings AFL club needed no convincing to join Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta’s community campaign to fix the chaotic Lindum Station intersection.

In just ten days Mr Vasta has already collected 2000 signatures and has now partnered with a number of local organisations including IONA College and the Wynnum Vikings AFL Club to increase that number even further.

Father Michael Twigg from IONA College said the crossing has been in need of upgrading for many decades and the college wholeheartedly supports Mr Vasta’s community campaign to fix the problematic intersection.

Recently Mr Vasta met with Wynnum Vikings President Brendan Hodgkins, and Vice President Samantha Edmunds to discuss the need for action on the Lindum crossing, they agreed.

Mrs Edmunds said “as our field is located on Kianawah Road, quite a number of our families are required to use this dangerous and congested crossing.

“It has been a problem for years and while there have been plenty of attempts to fix it, we are now at a point where we need a better solution and that’s why we’re backing Mr Vasta’s petition to sort it out.”

Mr Vasta says in less than two weeks the online petition has already reached 2000 signatures and that’s not including the hard copy versions in local shops and businesses around town.

“The locals have come on board in droves and I’m confident that with the backing of the Bonner community together we can fix the Lindum crossing.”

The petition closes in February and Mr Vasta will then be presenting it to the Federal Government.

Multi-Million Dollar Manufacturer Sets up Shop in Bonner

KWB Group, owners of the Kitchen Connection yesterday invited locals to take a tour of their brand new $12 million facility in Lytton.

The new 10,800 sqm manufacturing plant, originally in New South Wales, now calls Lytton home and has been welcomed with open arms by the local community.

Federal Member for Bonner said it’s great to see KWB Group putting such a big investment in this community.

“It’s wonderful to see more and more manufacturers coming to the Bonner community, boosting our local economy and employing more people.

“The coalition government is committed to supporting manufacturing in Australia; in the 2017-18 budget we delivered a $100-million fund for manufacturers to expand and diversify their businesses because we know the flow on benefits for the country and the local communities.

“I am proud to have joined owners John Bourke and Chris Palin to officially open this facility, I can foresee a very long and fruitful relationship between KWB and the Bonner community and I encourage more manufacturers to follow suite and come to Bonner,” Mr Vasta said.
KWB Group Managing Director John Bourke says investing in Queensland is a big part of the KWB brand.

“The Lytton site presented one of the best options for us due to its sheer size, accessibility to main arterials and proximity to our expanding network of Kitchen Connection showrooms.”

“With this new facility we now have the opportunity to be able to sell and install kitchens faster and more efficiently than anyone else in the Queensland Renovation Market.”

Kitchen connection already has 11 showrooms throughout Queensland and New South Wales, with an additional five set to open by 2018.

Child care relief around corner for Bonner families

Over 6,500 families in Bonner will be better off thanks to the Turnbull Government’s child care overhaul.

Member for Bonner Ross Vasta said the new child care package will provide the greatest hours of support to the families who work the longest hours, and the greatest subsidy and financial support to the families who earn the least.

“We know the cost pressures that families face so we’ve taken action to overhaul a broken system,” said Mr Vasta.

“Families using child care in Bonner have told me that they need increased childcare support and my government is providing that relief.”
Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said the child care changes are focused on helping the families that need it most, Minister Birmingham said.

“Almost one million families will benefit from our additional $2.5 billion investment and comprehensive changes to the subsidy system, our new hourly rate cap to put downward pressure on fee increases and the end of the $7,613 annual rebate cap,” Minister Birmingham said.
“With 1.15 million Australian families set to access child care next year it’s important families have the opportunity to plan for the changes.

“I urge families to visit our child care estimator, plug in their details and see exactly how they’re set to benefit.”

The Turnbull Government’s child care package includes:
• Increasing Australia’s investment in early childhood education and care by $2.5 billion so that almost one million Australian families benefit
• Introducing a better targeted activity test to ensure taxpayer subsidised child care places are targeted to those who depend on it in order to work, or work more hours.
• Delivering the highest rate of subsidy to those on the lowest income levels and more hours of subsidy to those who work the most. We’re increasing the base subsidy from around 72 per cent to 85 per cent for the more than 370,000 families earning around $65,000 or less a year.
• Low and middle income families, earning up to around $185,000, will no longer be limited by an annual $7,613 cap on the amount of subsidised child care they can access – that’s more than 85 per cent of families using child care and means families won’t run out of subsidy mid-year as happens now. Families earning more than around $185,000 will also benefit from an increased cap of $10,000.
• A $1.2 billion Child Care Safety Net will support vulnerable children and families who need extra support.

Australian Brain Cancer Mission $100 million fund to fight brain cancer

The Turnbull Government is today announcing a $100 million fund in an effort to defeat brain cancer and provide a better life for those suffering from this terrible disease.

The Australian Brain Cancer Mission is a partnership between the Federal Government, philanthropists, medical experts, patients and their families.

The Mission aims to double survival rates of people living with brain cancer over the next 10 years, which hasn’t changed significantly in the past 30 years.

In the long-term our goal is to defeat brain cancer through world-wide collaboration.

As a first step, the Turnbull Government is providing $50 million through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), combined with $10 million from the Minderoo Foundation’s Eliminate Cancer Initiative and a commitment of $20 million from Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

We expect to announce the remaining $20 million in the coming months.
We are dollar matching every donation up to $50 million to support the Australian Brain Cancer Mission and I am calling on other Australians, government and industry to join this important initiative.

The Australian Brain Cancer Mission is underpinned by a research roadmap developed by Australian and international experts in brain cancer treatment and research, and those affected by brain cancer, their advocates and philanthropic interests.

Brain cancer affects many Australian adults of all ages, but it disproportionately affects children and we lose a classroom of kids each year to brain cancer.

This is an unacceptable statistic that must be reversed.

Our goal is to confine brain cancer mortality to the history books of time and we are aiming to replicate the success of our fight on other cancers such as leukemia.

A key objective of the Australian Brain Cancer Mission is to ensure every patient, adult and child in Australia has the opportunity to participate in clinical trials.

This will be done by investing in more clinical trials, new discovery work, further international collaborations, expanding research platforms and technologies, and fostering the talent of our researchers.

Prioritised first investments include the establishment of an Australian arm of the GBM AGILE, an international adaptive trial platform for adults with glioblastoma, which will be co-funded by the Turnbull Government, the Minderoo Foundation’s Eliminate Cancer Initiative and Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

We will also prioritise new funding for Australian and New Zealand Children's Haematology Oncology Group (ANZCHOG) clinical trial centres and support the consolidation of the national ZERO Children’s Cancer initiative.

There will be opportunities for new research grant projects, scholarships, fellowships and biopharmaceutical industry partnerships to collaborate on drug discovery.

Cancer Australia will administer the Mission supported by a Strategic Advisory Group.

This group will comprise brain cancer patients, clinicians, researchers, co-investors and industry representatives, as well as a member of the MRFF’s Australian Medical Research Advisory Board.

Health and medical research is a focus and pillar of our Long-Term National Health Plan.

Research is essential for preparing Australia for the health care challenges of the future.

The MRFF provides Australia with an opportunity to call out national missions to tackle some of these challenges, and brain cancer is the first of more missions to come.

I want to congratulate and thank Nicola and Andrew Forrest AO and the Minderoo Foundation’s Eliminating Cancer Initiative on their contribution of $10 million to help fuel the Mission.

I would like to thank Cure Brain Cancer Foundation for their leadership in the brain cancer space and for committing a further $20 million.

I would particularly like to thank Mr Dustin Perry for his tireless work in raising awareness of the need for more brain cancer research.
The Australian Brain Cancer Mission is bold and delivers new hope.

This Mission builds on a number of Government initiatives including a $13 million clinical trial grant program with a focus on rare cancers, a commitment to establishing the southern hemisphere’s first proton beam therapy facility in South Australia, $20 million for the Zero Childhood Cancer initiative and the brain cancer clinical trial AIM BRAIN.

Missions can be long journeys that include setbacks. But, with collective commitment they have the potential to deliver the impossible, offering new hope.
