ASSISTANT MINISTER TO THE TREASURER CALLS FOR BONNER LOCALS TO STAND UP AGAINST LABOR’S PENSIONERS AND RETIREES TAX

Over 50 Bonner residents attended a Pensioners and Retirees Tax Roundtable with Assistant Minister to the Treasurer the Hon Michael Sukkar and Member for Bonner Ross Vasta in Wynnum today.

“So many people have contacted me about Labor’s policy on franking credits and how this shameless tax grab will negatively impact them,” Mr Vasta said.

Mr Sukkar said many people were worried about Labor’s Pensioners and Retirees Tax, and said the Coalition would be fighting Labor’s proposal from now until the next election. He called on attendees and others impacted in the community to stand up and be counted and to spread the word to their friends and family.

“The Government is supporting retirees who have worked hard all their life and done the right thing by setting themselves up for retirement,” Mr Sukkar said.

“In contrast, Labor is proposing to tax retirees. This will leave retirees with less money to live on and disinsentivise younger Australians from saving.

“For over 3 years Bill Shorten has told Australians that he is fighting against the big end of town, when in reality he is doing the opposite. Labor has promised well over $200 billion in increased taxes and is intending to make retirees take on the largest burden of these tax increases.”

Betty Ollenburg from Wynnum said she had substantial concerns about Labor’s policy.

“As a self-funded retiree, it would affect my portfolio quite significantly. I may even be forced to dip into my capital to get along,” Mrs Ollenburg said.

David Dilger from Mansfield said he had been a third generation Labor voter until March this year, when Labor announced their franking credits policy.

“I’m scratching my head wondering how Labor could betray people like this. Their policy also affects young people and their ability to generate an income. And then for older people, there’s the question of whether Shorten will stick to the pensioner guarantee,” Mr Dilger said.

Tom and Shirley Tolland from Rochedale said it had been a very enlightening and informative session.

“It was good to hear many different points of view from people in different financial positions. The franking credits proposal affects us all so it was good to learn more about it from the Minister,” Mrs Tolland said.

Mr Sukkar said he and Mr Vasta would be taking attendees’ real-life examples to Canberra to further make the case against Labor’s Pensioners and Retirees Tax policy.

Mr Vasta invited people who wanted to share their stories or who had further questions to contact his office on 3893 3488.

Local projects deliver stronger communities in Bonner

·         Applications for Round 4 of the Stronger Communities Programme are now open

·         The program will fund local projects to build social and community connections

·         The Coalition Government has committed up to $22.5 million under Round 4 of the program

Communities across Australia are set to share in $22.5 million to improve local infrastructure and provide essential community equipment with applications now open for Round 4 of the Stronger Communities Programme.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the program is aimed at funding projects that deliver social benefits and form part of the Coalition Government’s continuing commitment to strengthen communities across Australia.

“Our local communities are the heart of this great country and the investment in local projects under the Stronger Communities Programme is about invigorating these communities and ensuring their continued success,” Dr McVeigh said.

“The program will fund small capital projects in each of the 150 federal electorates, which can range from upgrading the local community hall or sporting facility, building new bike paths, or providing essential equipment for the local SES.

“These are the sorts of vital projects that bring our communities together, strengthen our social connections, build community participation and create vibrant and viable communities into the future.”

Each electorate will receive $150,000 to allocate towards successful projects, with a maximum of 20 projects to be funded per electorate.

Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said the additional investment for a fourth round of SCP would ensure that local decision making continues to play a decisive role in funding community building projects.

“Our region has been very successful under previous rounds of the Stronger Communities Programme, last year I secured $20,000 for Rochedale State High School to upgrade its sport stadium seating,” Mr Vasta said.

“Grants will be available between $2,500 and $20,000 for successful applications and I now invite organisations within the community to put forward their attractive, high-quality, projects for assessment.”

Applications in Bonner open on Monday 6 August 2018, and close on Monday 3 September 2018.

To express your interest in this funding round contact the electorate office on 3893 3488.

COFFEE WITH A COP DRAWS CROWD IN CARINA

Local residents from Carindale and Carina joined officers from Carina Police Station at a Coffee with a Cop session hosted by Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta, in Carina today.

Coffee with a Cop gives members of the community an opportunity to get to know their local police officers, discuss their experiences with crime, and seek advice on protecting their homes and properties from lawbreakers.

“Constituents regularly tell me their concerns about local crime and safety,” Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said.

“I invited locals along to this Coffee with a Cop so they could get to know their local officers in a relaxed environment, where they could share the issues that affect them most,” Mr Vasta said.

“There was a great response today to the Government’s $1 million funding boost to continue Crime Stoppers’s Dob in a Dealer campaign, which is fighting the scourge of ice and drugs on our streets.”

Carina resident Roger Brooker attended the event to discuss speeding and vandalism with his local police.

“I think events like this are a great idea because they make our police, and our politicians, more accessible. I feel more comfortable coming here to talk to police than at the station. Thanks to Ross for putting this together for the community,” Mr Brooker said.

Carina Police Station officer in charge Senior Sergeant Brendan Jorgensen said these types of events are extremely important for local communities to engage with.

“Building a level of engagement with the local community can only have positive effects for us all,” Snr Sgt Jorgensen said.

Mr Vasta said he would be holding more Coffee with a Cop sessions soon, and that more information would be available on his Facebook page.

He encouraged members of the public to complete his online Community Safety Survey at https://rossvasta.com.au/Surveys/CommunitySafetySurvey.aspx.

$29.7 Million on Offer for Local Sport Clubs

Federal MP Ross Vasta is encouraging local sporting groups in Bonner to take advantage of the Coalition’s Community Sport Infrastructure Grants to secure a share of $29.7 million.
The Community Sport Infrastructure grant program launched last week enables sport and community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure in 2018-19.
Mr Vasta urged local sporting groups to consider projects that would help build participation in physical activity, community partnerships and inclusiveness.
“Sporting facilities are vital for inspiring physical activity and health, but also for building community spirit and pride,” Mr Vasta said.
“I encourage sport and community groups to collaborate and think about projects that could enhance our facilities in the Bonner area. Even the smallest of facility projects can have a big impact on boosting local business, economy, health and social cohesiveness.
“Improving lighting, playing surfaces and accessibility for different ages and genders are just some of the ways sporting facilities can be made safer and more appealing.”
The program will be managed by Sport Australia, the Australian Government’s leading agency for sport and physical activity.
Applications will remain open until September 14 and more information on the Community Sport Infrastructure grant program can be found at https://www.sportaus.gov.au/grants_and_funding/community_sport_infrastructure_grant_program
