Intersection upgrade on Old Cleveland and Stanbrough Roads, Belmont

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) would like to advise of upcoming safety works on the intersection of Old Cleveland and Stanbrough Roads in Belmont.

Works are expected to start Monday 7 April 2014 and be completed by end of June 2014, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Overnight works will be carried out Monday to Friday between 7pm and 5am, and some day works will occur Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm.

The Old Cleveland Road and Stanbrough Road intersection has an ongoing history of traffic incidents. Due to this history and the proximity of these incidents to the local community, residents and recreational facilities, TMR has committed funding from the Safer Roads Sooner program to upgrade this intersection.

The upgrade of the Old Cleveland Road and Stanbrough Road intersection will improve safety at this intersection for road users and the local community, particularly for turning vehicles.

The safety project works will involve:

· permanent closure of existing median
· left-in, left-out configuration for Stanbrough Road
· left-in, left-out configuration for Main Drive
· construction of acceleration lane for Stanbrough Road traffic
· relocation of Translink bus stop (routes 250, 270, 856 and N250) approximately 110 metres west of Stanbrough Road to ensure safety for merging traffic and buses
· relocation of Australia Post mail box approximately 150 metres west of Stanbrough Road.

Motorists can use nearby traffic signals on Old Cleveland Road at the Cross Street and Tilley Street intersections for turning movements. These signals are located within 1.5km of the Old Cleveland and Stanbrough Roads intersection.

Some traffic delays, lane closures, construction noise and reduced speed limits through the work site can be expected. Traffic control will be in place to ensure safety of road workers and motorists.

TMR apologises for any inconvenience and appreciates your patience while these important works are carried out.

If you require further information on this project, please contact Mr Ron Michel, Regional Director, Metropolitan Region on 3066 4299 or by email metropolitanregion@tmr.qld.gov.au during business hours.

Alternatively please contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 13QGOV (137 468) during business hours.

BNE WELCOMES INPUT FOR MASTER PLAN

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) has released its Preliminary Draft Master Plan for the future development of the airport for public comment, setting the scene for a $2.5 billion investment in airport infrastructure over the next two decades.

Julieanne Alroe, BAC CEO and Managing Director, said the 2014 Master Plan, once finalised, would ensure airport planning addresses industry demand and growth, while focusing on achieving a balance between economic development, sound environmental management and sustainability.

“We have looked at the 2,700 hectares that encompasses Brisbane Airport to see where we can best plan for the future. Whether it’s a bike path, new road or terminal expansion, every aspect is addressed within the Master Plan.

“While the Master Plan is the blueprint for development to meet future demand, it also forms the platform for BAC’s ongoing contribution to the local, state and national economy over coming decades and we welcome input from our community about these plans,” Ms Alroe said.

Information covered in the 2014 Preliminary Draft Plan includes:

· Growth forecasts: Passengers through Brisbane Airport are expected to more than double to 48 million annually by 2034.

· Regional economic benefits: It is expected Brisbane Airport will contribute $8.2 billion to the Queensland economy and provide around 51,500 full time jobs within the next two decades.

· Airfield and terminal development: Terminal expansions and transport needs feature in BNE’s growth plans.

· Commercial development: The creation of five sub-precincts to maintain business clusters and generate a sense of identity and community.

· Airspace protection: Ongoing management of safe and efficient movement of aircraft to and from Brisbane Airport adhering to relevant regulations, processes and guidelines.

· Aircraft noise management: Updated version of the Current and Future Flight Path and Noise information booklet has been prepared to complement the Master Plan.

· Community and stakeholder engagement: Ongoing commitment to supporting and engaging with the local community through a variety of avenues.

· A comprehensive Ground Transport Plan: Focusing on stimulating greater use of public transport.

· An Airport Environment Strategy: Detailing the management of the surrounding environment to ensure the impacts of growth are managed.

The public comment period runs for 60 business days from today. Once the community has had the opportunity to comment on the Master Plan it will be submitted to the Australian Government for approval.

The 2014 Preliminary Draft Master Plan and supporting documents are available to view online and copies available for viewing at BAC’s Head Office at Skygate and Brisbane City Council libraries. Hard copies of the Master Plan can be purchased for $100. A number of public displays will be held during the public comment period. For more details visit www.bne.com.au or call the Master Plan team on 1800 737 075.

The 2014 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards

Australia’s largest and oldest poetry writing competition for students, will open for entries on March 1.

Primary and secondary students across Australia are invited to explore the wonderful world of creative writing and have a go at telling their own stories using poetic tools.

This year awards celebrate their 30th anniversary. With this in mind the optional theme, ‘What Shall We Tell You’, has been chosen from the verse poem The Golden Journey To Samarkand by James Elroy Flecker, to encourage the idea of links between past and present, important milestones, memorable times and events.

Last year 10,000 poems were written by students from 700 schools nationally, with winners sharing over $7000 worth of prizes including cash, trophies, books and a trip to Gunnedah in north-west NSW – home of the awards and where Dorothea Mackellar’s family owned several properties.

The awards are divided into nine categories and are open to all school students from kindergarten to year 12. Individual students can win up to $500 and while prizes for primary and secondary school whose entries demonstrate a high overall standard are worth $1000 each. There are categories for students on learning assistance and special education programs and the Community Relations Commission (NSW) is supporting a category for the best poem highlighting the value of cultural diversity within the Australian community.

Judging the entries this year are authors Corinne Fenton (primary sections) and Nette Hilton (secondary sections) – highly accomplished children’s authors with numerous award winning work, both passionate poetry lovers.

Competition closing date is 30 June 2014. Winners will be announced on the 29th August during the National Presentation ceremony, their work will be published in online and print format and promoted nationally.

Entries are accepted online via www.dorothea.com.au , primary students have an option of postal submission – forms and all relevant information about the competition are available on our website.
