LOCAL VETERANS TO BENEFIT FROM FUNDING FOR MANLY LOTA RSL

Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said veterans and their families in the Manly-Lota area would benefit from Australian Government grant funding for a local project.

Mr Vasta said the Returned and Services League of Australia’s Manly-Lota Sub-Branch had been awarded $37,800 to install air-conditioning at its community hall in Manly under the Veteran and Community Grants program.

“By providing funding to local organisations for special projects, the Government is helping improve the lives of veterans, their families and local communities,” Mr Vasta said.

“The dedication and hard work of organisations such as Manly-Lota RSL ensure veterans and their families receive services, support and opportunities to play a bigger role in our community.

“Manly-Lota RSL has a well-deserved reputation for its commitment to improving the lives of those who have served our nation and these grants are another way we honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our country.”

President of Manly-Lota RSL, Doug Jones welcomed the announcement.

“Air-conditioning for the hall will not only benefit the older ex-diggers, but also other citizens who use the hall. There are 27 community organisations that currently use the hall,” Mr Jones said.

“Temperatures can get quite hot inside the hall, so this will make it more comfortable for the people inside particularly the elderly.”

Ex-service and community organisations, veteran groups and private organisations that contribute to the health and welfare of the veteran community are eligible to apply for funding through the DVA Veteran and Community Grants program.

IMPROVED FACILITIES FOR HEMMANT FLEXIBLE LEARNING CENTRE

Hemmant Flexible Learning Centre will soon have two new General Learning Areas and associated walkways after Member for Bonner Ross Vasta MP today announced a $298,312 Australian Government grant through the Capital Grants Program.

Mr Vasta congratulated Hemmant Flexible Learning Centre on being selected for the grant and said it would be in addition to the record levels of funding the Turnbull Government is investing in schools.

“These funds will ensure students at Hemmant Flexible Learning Centre have the infrastructure necessary to help them get the most out of their time at school,” Mr Vasta said.

Principal of Hemmant Flexible Learning Centre, Paul Flanders said he was pleased with the announcement.

“These additional educational facilities at Hemmant Flexible Learning Centre will be of great benefit to the young people who attend the school,” Mr Flanders said.

“These new rooms will allow for more differentiated and specialised delivery of curriculum to cater for the diverse needs of our student population.”

Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said the Capital Grants Program provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure where they otherwise may not have access to sufficient resources.

“The Turnbull Government is committed to improving the quality of our school education and ensuring students have access to the resources they need so they are equipped with the skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive world,” Minister Birmingham said.

“The Turnbull Government believes in an education system that puts students first. That’s why in addition to our Capital Grants Program, our record levels of schools funding will be allocated according to need and tied to a range of evidence-based initiatives. These initiatives will focus on outcomes in literacy, numeracy and STEM subjects, helping lift teacher quality and better preparing our children for life after school.”

Further information on the Capital Grants Program can be found on the Department of Education and Training website at www.education.gov.au.

Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta MP, has encouraged the community to honour Remembrance Day and remember every Australian who has made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our nation.

“Remembrance Day on November 11 marks 98 years since the Armistice that ended the First World War,” Ross Vasta said.

“I encourage everyone to pause for one minute’s silence at 11am and to wear a red poppy in memory of our servicemen and women who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom in both World Wars and in all theatres of war and conflict.

“On Remembrance Day we honour more than 102,000 Australians who have died serving our country.

“It is important we keep their memory alive and educate the next generation about their service and sacrifice.”

CELEBRATING OUR CARERS DURING NATIONAL CARER’S WEEK

This Friday, 21 October, FSG Australia (FSG) and Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta MP, will be coming together to host a Carers Morning Tea at the FSG Café in Wynnum during National Carer’s Week, to celebrate Australia’s more than 2.8 million unpaid carers.

“Unpaid carers are often performing this role for a loved one or family member, and it can often lead to levels of social isolation, as well as personal and financial stress. An estimated $1.9 billion of care is provided by this group and without them, aged and disability care would simply be unaffordable. It is therefore important to recognise the work they do. Events like this during National Carer’s Week are a small gesture from our community to say thank you,” says Ross Vasta MP.

FSG Australia provides supports to Australians who care for parents, children, relatives, partners and friends, through workshops, courses, respite services and information provision.

“Carers come from every area of our community. Not many people know that more than 300,000 of Australia’s unpaid carers are younger than 25. The role is often performed without support or recognition. We wanted to come together in our local community to demonstrate community support for our carers and let them know what they do counts,” says Sharon Munn, FSG Senior Coordinator, Aged and Carer Services.

“It’s important that people understand how difficult and isolating being a carer can be. I had to give up work to look after my late father for five years, while also caring for my multiple handicapped son. I’m glad we have events like this in our local area that let carers know they’re not alone and that there’s support out there for them,” says Gillian Dowling from Wynnum West.

FSG and Ross Vasta have invited carers from the local Wynnum/Manly community to attend the morning tea to acknowledge the vital role they play in our society.

Event details:
10am, Friday 21 October
FSG Café, 70-72 Edith Street, Wynnum

GIVING BONNER TEACHERS TOOLS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

A new Turnbull Government-backed initiative will ensure educators in Bonner have access to the latest teaching strategies and practical advice on how to support students with learning difficulties.

Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said the Turnbull Government’s $341,000 funding to DSF Literacy and Clinical Services in Western Australia would ensure the organisation’s new guide is freely available online across the country.

“This guide will give teachers from all backgrounds practical advice on how to identify and support the estimated five per cent of students who face challenges in the way they learn,” Mr Vasta said.

“The Turnbull Government’s funding means the combined knowledge of leading experts in educating students with learning difficulties will be contained in a free and easy-to-access guide.

“Ultimately by better equipping teachers with these skills and strategies this guide will ensure students around Australia can better manage and take advantage of their education opportunities.”

“The guide, Understanding Learning Difficulties, focuses on specific learning difficulties in dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (written expression) and dyscalculia (mathematics).

“It’s clear how important the guide is given that estimates suggest four out of five students with a developmental learning disability have dyslexia.

Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said Understanding Learning Difficulties will give Bonner principals, teachers and school psychologists a deeper understanding of the significant impact learning disabilities can have on students.

“It’s a valuable addition to the tool kit of teachers dedicated to effectively supporting the diverse learning needs of their students,” Minister Birmingham said.

“Every Australian child should be given the support they need at school to do their best. That’s why in this year’s Budget we committed a further $118.2 million over 2016 and 2017 for young people with disability. Our increased funding commitment for students with disability means the Turnbull Government is investing a record $5.3 billion from 2014 to 2017, exceeding the previous Labor government’s unfunded promises.

“Federal government funding for schools across Australia will grow from $16 billion in 2016 to $20.1 billion in 2020 and we will be working to ensure that funding is distributed fairly and according to need so that schools currently delivering valuable programs can continue to do so.”

Teachers can download the free resource through their state or territory education portal. Print copies of Understanding Learning Difficulties – A Practical Guide are also available for purchase.

FSG HELPING TO BUILD A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY IN WYNNUM

People living with dementia, their families and carers would benefit from new initiatives being developed by FSG Australia to build a dementia friendly community in Wynnum, Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said today.

“In Australia over 350,000 people are currently living with dementia. This Dementia Awareness Month it’s important to let these people and the people who care for them know the community supports them and their needs,” Mr Vasta said.

“FSG Australia is working on some fantastic initiatives in Wynnum to increase support in the community for people living with dementia and their carers.”

“Just recently I had the privilege to attend FSG’s first Dementia Friendly Community Café. It was great to see this friendly group of carers and people with dementia come together in support of each other.”

Mr Vasta said his office had recently taken part in the Dementia Education and Training Program run by FSG.

“This program provides individual carers and their families with education, training and support—another valuable part of letting carers and people living with dementia know they’re not alone,” Mr Vasta said.

NATIONAL SKILLS WEEK KICKS OFF WITH NRL AND AFL SUPPORT

NRL and AFL players will champion apprentices and trainees in Bonner this week when they team up with the Australian Government for National Skills Week.

Mr Vasta said the week, which runs from 29 August to 4 September, showcases the vital contribution vocational education and training (VET) makes to the community.

Fifteen past and present NRL stars have shared videos of their stories as graduates of the VET system to promote the trades.

“These football heroes have inspiring stories to tell school leavers and others looking to gain new skills. They’re great role models for young Australians and they demonstrate how flexible an apprenticeship can be,” Mr Vasta said.

The AFL SportsReady program has also played a role in supporting players through vocational training.

Mr Vasta said that thanks to Kevin Sheedy’s advocacy the Turnbull Government was also able to announce today that AFL SportsReady is coming on board with Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors.

“Kevin Sheedy co-founded AFL SportsReady more than 20 years ago to help provide employment pathways for AFL players. Last year over 200 players completed a nationally recognised VET qualification through AFL SportsReady. With AFL SportsReady supporting Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors, we’ll have even more stories to tell to inspire young men and women out there to learn what an apprenticeship or a traineeship can offer,” Mr Vasta said.

“Last year more than 4.5 million Australians participated in VET to get skills for a job.”

“National Skills Week celebrates the significance and strength of our VET system because a strong, diverse VET system is critical for a prosperous future for Australia. That’s why the Turnbull Government has committed around $7 billion to the sector in 2016-17,” Mr Vasta said.

Mr Vasta said more than 500 events across the country will run during National Skills Week.

“Whether it’s an inspirational football player or learning about a skill you need to pursue your goals, National Skills Week offers plenty of places to go and people to see about making your dream job a reality,” Mr Vasta said.

“The Turnbull Government has initiatives to support people pursuing training in vocational, skills or trade fields and I’d encourage anyone thinking about getting trade to go along to a National Skills Week activity to see how they can achieve their goals.”

WYNNUM CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CHURCH HELPING LOCALS IN ZAMBIA

Wynnum Christian Community Church (WCCC) at Manly West is to be commended for their ongoing missionary work in Zambia, Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said today.

“I’m pleased to donate leftover rolls of plastic booth wrap from my election campaign to the Church for this good cause,” Mr Vasta said.

“The Church will be sending the wrap to Chingola in Zambia, included in containers of aid that will benefit locals.”

WCCC Secretary David Forward said the rolls of plastic would have two major uses in Chingola.

“Our missionary happens to be a very good grower of vegetables and has begun to teach the Zambians how to grow three crops a year instead of one. One of his real successes is strawberries,” Mr Forward said.

“The wrap will be placed on the ground in his strawberry crop, with the plants growing through the plastic. It will also be used to cover grass roofs of houses to give further protection in the wet season.”

Over the last 10 years WCCC has sent 16 containers of aid to orphanages, schools and the local hospital in Chingola. Each container usually contains 8 to 10 tonnes of aid, all donated by the community.

Mr Vasta thanked WCCC for their good work and commended them for having three more containers of aid ready to go to Chingola.

“Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the material used during an election campaign? I’m proud to donate mine to an outstanding cause that is helping people in need in Zambia,” Mr Vasta said.
