CONSTITUENCY STATEMENT: LINDUM CROSSING AND NEWNHAM RD-WECKER RD INTERSECTION

I think I’ve talked here about my local campaigns to fix the Lindum Station crossing and the Newnham Road-Wecker Road intersection three or four times this year. I’m happy to say that there have been some very good developments with both campaigns since I launched them last year. My petition to fix the Lindum Station crossing has well over 5,000 signatures now; and my petition to fix the Newnham Road-Wecker Road intersection has well over 1,000 signatures.

I was pleased to have the Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population out in Bonner recently to inspect these two black spots. Minister Tudge only had to take one look at the Lindum Station crossing to agree that it’s an accident waiting to happen. He acknowledges that it needs fixing, that it has to be done right, with the state Labor government needing to come to the party along with the Brisbane City Council. I’m hopeful that the Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads’ response will be as positive as my constituents’. The state government cannot pass the buck to the Brisbane City Council.

Last week I had a meeting with state member for Lytton, Joan Pease, and I would like to acknowledge her good work in helping to improve the car park at the station and changing the line marking in front of the boom gate. However, the station is still a very dangerous intersection and, with over 1,400 Iona College students needing to cross it every day, a major accident is unfortunately inevitable. I’ve told Ms Pease that I will seek a federal funding contribution, but it’s sad that the buck-passing is continuing. What a shame, but make no mistake: I’ll keep fighting for my constituents.

However, I have more encouraging news on the Newnham Road-Wecker Road intersection. Minister Tudge also agrees with me that a fix is needed, and he put the cost at around $12 million. He said that he’ll be working with the Brisbane City Council and me to investigate a solution to the intersection. It is one of the five worst intersections in the state, according to the RACQ.

My petitions are available on my website, or you can ring my office for paper copies. I want to thank the community for their strong support and say unequivocally: I won’t pass the buck and I won’t let you down. Thank you.

90 SECOND STATEMENT: BETTER AGEING GRANT PROGRAM

It was great to see the Minister for Sport launch the Move It Australia—Better Ageing Grant Program last month. With our ageing population, it’s more important than ever to get older Australians up and moving. The Better Ageing Grant Program has grants of up to $2 million available to help deliver sporting programs to Australians over 65. I want to encourage local sporting, local community, local non-government and local government organisations in my electorate to apply.

There are some fantastic sporting initiatives in Bonner for seniors. Walking football is one of them, and it’s taking off in the electorate. Bayside United Football Club and Wynnum 60 and Better Program have organised walking only soccer matches for older locals. I played one of their matches recently. Players told me that it was great to be able to participate in a team sport that wasn’t too hard on their bodies but kept them active, fit and social. I have to thank Bayside United president Greg Pascal for championing the sport and helping it grow in the electorate.

Bayside United plans to run two walking football competitions in the near future. One will be for 50- to 59-year-olds; the other will be for over-60s. I actually turned 52 last week, so you could say I have a shot at a soccer championship one day! Actually, seeing how the players walked rings around me on the field the other day, I’d have really no chance! Well done to Bayside United and Wynnum 60 and Better. I can’t wait to see things kick off soon.

ADJOURNMENT: WYNNUM AND MANLY DISTRICT MEALS ON WHEELS

Last month I spoke about one of the extraordinary volunteers in my electorate, Irene Edwards. Earlier this year Irene received a Medal of the Order of Australia for her volunteer work at Wynnum Manly Meals on Wheels and other local organisations.

Today I want to talk about her husband Ken Edwards, also OAM. Ken is the President of the Wynnum Manly Meals on Wheels. Thanks to Ken’s efforts and other Meals on Wheels volunteers, and the support of the community, construction on the brand new Wynnum Manly Meals on Wheels kitchen and community centre at Wakerley has begun. It’s been a decades-long journey for Ken and the others. It’s a great story I wanted to share, one that others can take inspiration from.

I’m proud to support an outstanding organisation like Meals on Wheels. I think we all know someone Meals on Wheels has helped, whether it’s themselves or an aged, frail or disabled relative or friend. I very much support efforts to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable members of our society; the Coalition government’s announcement of the aged care royal commission this week was very welcome.

But getting back to Meals on Wheels, the volunteers at Wynnum Manly have made such a huge difference at the local level. I turned the first sod at the new Wakerley site last Friday. Let me tell you, seeing the happiness on Ken’s face and how excited everyone was, it really made me proud to have secured them $300,000 in federal funding at the last election to fit out and equip their new facility. As well as a $20,000 Stronger Communities grant they used to purchase new kitchen equipment.

I also have to commend Brisbane City Council and my colleague Councillor Ryan Murphy for making the site available for lease to the Meals on Wheels.

These are significant investments from government. But compare it to everything the local community’s put toward getting the new Meals on Wheels facility up and running. Since 1995, they’ve fundraised tirelessly to make their new and improved home a reality. Together they’ve raised $2.8 million. What an achievement!

In Ken’s words, it’s been a very hard, dogged slug for this length of time. The hard work and perseverance from everyone involved has been such an inspiration. And I’m glad to say the benefits will flow on to the whole community.

The centre’s state-of-the-art commercial kitchen will allow the Meals on Wheels volunteers to cook, prepare and deliver more hot meals to more homes in the community. That means more people that will receive help to stay independent and remain in their own homes for longer. The fully-equipped kitchen will also ensure the Meals on Wheels can prepare meals to their usual high standards.

But that’s not all. The centre will also have many other features that local groups will be able to use for seminars, public meetings, training workshops, and other community events and activities.

There’ll be a community meeting room available for hire that can hold up to 150 people. Training spaces will be available, as well as a board room with a complete audio visual fit out, volunteer facilities, a veranda café, and a separate community kitchen.

Sporting spaces will also be available to sports groups in the area. Brisbane City Council is planning to build netball courts behind the new facility. These will be complemented by a canteen, dressing room and toilets underneath the new facility.

I’m so proud to be part of this government that recognises the importance of investing in vital community infrastructure projects like this. The new Meals on Wheels centre will help those in the community who need it most. It’s brought the community together, and when it’s completed it will serve to strengthen community ties. And it will also provide a boost to the local economy by creating dozens of construction jobs.

I can’t wait to see the completed kitchen and community centre and join everyone on opening day. I have to thank Ken and the rest of the Meals on Wheels volunteers, and everyone who donated to this worthy project, for their unwavering dedication. Thanks to your efforts the bayside community will benefit from this fantastic facility for years to come.

ROUND THREE OF SAFER COMMUNITIES FUND NOW OPEN

Member for Bonner Ross Vasta has called on local councils and community organisations in Bonner to apply for a share of up to $1 million in funding through round three of the Safer Communities Fund.

The Safer Communities Fund is an Australian Government commitment to keep Australians safe and secure by enhancing the efforts of local councils and community organisations to address crime and antisocial behaviour.

Local councils and community organisations are invited to apply through the third round of funding for security enhancement projects, including for initiatives such as CCTV, bollards, lighting and crime prevention through environmental design initiatives.

As well as the infrastructure stream, the third round includes a separate early intervention stream for community organisations to deliver crime prevention or activity based youth engagement projects.

Mr Vasta said the two funding streams provide a robust example of the Government’s commitment to the safety and security of local communities.

“By empowering local organisations and councils to improve their security infrastructure, addressing crime and anti-social behaviour, the initiative increases perceptions of safety and cohesion, fostering viable and vibrant communities into the future,” Mr Vasta said.

Applications for the infrastructure stream open today and close on 25 September 2018. Information on how to apply for funding is available on the Australian Government’s Safer Communities Fund – Infrastructure Stream website at business.gov.au/safer-communities-fund, or by calling 13 28 46.

Applications under the early intervention stream will open on 28 August 2018 and close on 25 September 2018.  Information on how to apply for funding is available on the Australian Government’s Safer Communities Fund – Early Intervention Stream website at business.gov.au/safer-communities-fund-early-intervention or by calling 13 28 46.

PRIVATE MEMBERS’ BUSINESS: VOLUNTEER GRANTS

I move:

That this House:

(1) recognises the fantastic contribution that volunteers make to the community of Bonner, and to Australia in general;

(2) notes there are 8 million volunteers around Australia in organisations like sports clubs, charities and schools;

(3) congratulates the Government for allocating $20 million in funding to support volunteering; and

(4) notes that volunteering efforts make an estimated annual economic and social contribution of $290 billion.

I’m thrilled this Government is continuing its strong support of our volunteers. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our local community organisations and groups. They make a real difference. I’m proud to recognise outstanding volunteers in my electorate every year with the Bonner Volunteer Awards. And I’m proud to be part of a Government that is supporting their efforts with $20 million for the 2018 Volunteer Grants round.

There are more than 8.7 million volunteers across Australia who make an estimated annual economic and social contribution of $290 billion. Volunteers help people into jobs. They reduce social marginalisation. They help increase community participation. By helping people come together and work alongside each other, they help build a stronger and safer community.

I’ve gotten to know so many fantastic volunteers in my electorate. I’ve spoken here before about the men and women who’ve been nominated for my Volunteer Awards. They come from all walks of life, from many different backgrounds, but deep down they’re the same. Hard-working. Selfless. Giving up their free time to help others. And never ever asking for recognition or reward.

There are many amazing volunteers I want to talk about today. But in the interest of time I want to single out Mrs Irene Edwards OAM from Manly West.

Irene epitomises the very best qualities of a volunteer. She’s done so much for the community over many years. She’s been a volunteer, team leader, management committee member, and historical officer at Wynnum Manly Meals on Wheels for over thirty years. In that time, she’s helped countless elderly locals. She’s provided them good meals and, better yet, the love and support of a good friend.

You couldn’t find a more skilled or passionate fundraiser. I’ve been working with the Meals on Wheels to get their new kitchen and community centre up and running in Wakerley. Irene was a major driving force in raising over $1.5 million toward the new centre. She’s also helped local veterans, fundraising for the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia, Brisbane East Branch for over a decade.

Irene has touched the lives of so many in the Wynnum Manly community. Her work has not gone unnoticed. She’s received the Medal of Merit from the Lions Club of Moreton Bay, as well as a Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly, for her volunteer work.

And in June, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, presented her with a Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to the community. Unfortunately she was too ill to attend Government House for the general presentation. So in a very touching, rare display, the Governor General paid her a home visit for a private investiture ceremony. Her husband Ken tells me it was a wonderful experience for them, their children, and their grandchildren who attended.

Irene was deeply humbled and proud to accept this high honour. Ken tells me she still can’t believe it—well I and many others in the community can, and we thank you for everything you’ve done for us.

I am so thankful for all our local volunteers; Bonner wouldn’t be the same without you. You all deserve the highest praise for the incredible work you do in our area. I encourage local groups in my electorate to apply for the Volunteer Grants 2018 round to support our amazing volunteers.

$29.7 Million on Offer for Local Sport Clubs

Federal MP Ross Vasta is encouraging local sporting groups in Bonner to take advantage of the Coalition’s Community Sport Infrastructure Grants to secure a share of $29.7 million.
The Community Sport Infrastructure grant program launched last week enables sport and community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure in 2018-19.
Mr Vasta urged local sporting groups to consider projects that would help build participation in physical activity, community partnerships and inclusiveness.
“Sporting facilities are vital for inspiring physical activity and health, but also for building community spirit and pride,” Mr Vasta said.
“I encourage sport and community groups to collaborate and think about projects that could enhance our facilities in the Bonner area. Even the smallest of facility projects can have a big impact on boosting local business, economy, health and social cohesiveness.
“Improving lighting, playing surfaces and accessibility for different ages and genders are just some of the ways sporting facilities can be made safer and more appealing.”
The program will be managed by Sport Australia, the Australian Government’s leading agency for sport and physical activity.
Applications will remain open until September 14 and more information on the Community Sport Infrastructure grant program can be found at https://www.sportaus.gov.au/grants_and_funding/community_sport_infrastructure_grant_program

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY FOR $27.8M GREEN CAMP ROAD UPGRADE

Construction has kicked off on the $27.8 million upgrade to the Green Camp Road corridor, reducing congestion and improving safety for motorists, cyclists and public transport users.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the critical upgrade would widen Green Camp Road to a minimum of four lanes to get residents home quicker and safer, with more travel options.

“Council’s upgrade to the Green Camp Road corridor is one of more than 1000 road projects in a $2 billion investment that is taking real action on traffic congestion,” Cr Quirk said.

“In addition to widening the corridor, the project will deliver major upgrades to intersections at Green Camp Road and Tilley Road, as well as at Green Camp Road and Rickertt Road.”

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the Turnbull Government is contributing $10 million to this important project, which forms part of a record $75 billion investment in key infrastructure, including more than $20 billion for Queensland.

“This upgrade will offer immediate benefits to all road users, as well as future-proofing the corridor by delivering the infrastructure needed for the growing Brisbane region,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The Turnbull Government is committed to investing in vital infrastructure that tackles congestion – whether it’s a parent getting the kids to school on time or a tradie able to get to four jobs in a day instead of three.”

Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta said the Rickertt Road and Tilley Road intersections were currently operating well above capacity, leading to serious traffic incidents.

“This upgrade will improve safety with signalisation at these traffic blackspots, reducing the risk of serious traffic incidents for daily road users,” Mr Vasta said.

“Motorists will also benefit from travel time savings in the mornings and afternoons.”

Federal Member for Bowman Andrew Laming said the upgrade would be a benefit to not only Brisbane residents, but also Redland City residents.

“This partnership between Canberra and Brisbane City Council is addressing a massive economic bottle neck and I’m delighted this high-quality project will expand the capacity of Green Camp Road, to benefit businesses and residents,” Mr Laming said.

Doboy Ward Councillor Ryan Murphy said in coming months, a number of traffic changes would be implemented to fast-track the upgrade.

“For several months later this year, a temporary full-time closure of Tilley Road, adjacent to Green Camp Road, will be in place, to facilitate structural intersection works,” Cr Murphy said.

“Residents will be notified well in advance of the closure, and the temporary measure will allow Council to deliver this upgrade more quickly, and reduce impacts to the local community.”

Construction is expected to be complete by mid-2019.

“The Turnbull Government’s investment in these grants acknowledges the central role of grassroots services in helping financially vulnerable Australians transcend issues and strive for a better life.

BRISBANE METRO BRIEFING TO OUTLINE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Construction of the Brisbane Metro is a step closer with more than 200 business leaders from local and international companies expected to attend a special industry briefing today (Wed 25th) to hear about the construction and employment opportunities expected from the $944 million project.

Acting Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who will address the briefing along with Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher, said the specially convened briefing at City Hall would outline key milestones and opportunities and Council’s contracting model.

“We are gearing up to start procurement for the Brisbane Metro project that will cut travel times, unlock bus congestion in the CBD and improve services to the suburbs,” Acting Mayor Schrinner said.

“Brisbane Metro services will commence in 2023 and will revolutionise the way we travel, getting residents home up to 50 per cent faster on a high-frequency service, reducing bus congestion in inner-city streets and ensuring our city continues to thrive as a great place to live, work and relax.

“This briefing will provide local, national and international firms with the opportunity to start thinking about the skilled teams and innovation they could bring to the Brisbane Metro and kick start the delivery process of significant new infrastructure and a fleet of up to 60 Metro vehicles.

“Following the briefing, Council will commence the Expression of Interest phase for the main Inner City Infrastructure package including a new underground station at the Cultural Centre precinct and a new tunnel beneath Adelaide Street, as well as commencing an international Registration of Interest process for the fleet of 60 high-capacity Metro Vehicles.”

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the Turnbull Government was investing $300 million in the transformative Brisbane Metro project as part of its record $75 billion investment in key infrastructure.

“This project is a great example of how the Turnbull Government is investing in vital infrastructure designed to make our cities more liveable,” Mr Fletcher said.

“We are investing more than $20 billion in Queensland infrastructure which is possible because of a stronger economy.

“Whether it’s a tradie able to get to four jobs in a day instead of three, or a parent trying to drop the kids off at school on time, we want to ensure people are spending less time stuck in traffic and more time doing the things they’d rather be doing.”

Federal Member for Brisbane Trevor Evans said the project had been assessed as a High Priority project of national significance by the federal government’s independent advisor, Infrastructure Australia, in its 2018 Infrastructure Priority List.

“With two metro lines operating every three minutes in peak periods, Brisbane Metro will deliver a network of turn-up-and-go services linking the suburbs with the inner city and fixing major bottlenecks in the inner city that cause daily congestion,” Mr Evans said.

Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta said the Brisbane Metro would deliver a high-frequency metro network across 21 kilometres of existing busway linking the Eight Mile Plains, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and University of Queensland Lakes busway stations and all stations in between.

“This congestion-busting project is great news for our community and shows the Turnbull Government is planning for and investing in the future of our city,” Mr Vasta said.
