90 SECOND STATEMENT: MAKEABLES TINGALPA

I had a great experience recently connecting a local not-for-profit with local business, all for a great cause.

Makeables Tingalpa, which is part of Multicap, is a not-for-profit disability employer. Since 1991, Makeables has provided employment, job skills, and lasting working relationships for people with high needs disability.

Multicap business manager Joshua Walsh recently reached out to me asking for help connecting with businesses in the area. Makeables offers fantastic services for local businesses. This includes manual assembly, packing, or finishing services such as packaging, bag sealing and labelling. This can save businesses in employment costs and warehousing space.

Makeables employees also benefit from these arrangements. It gives employees life-changing skills and training. I had the great pleasure of meeting these employees at Makeables Tingalpa this month and seeing their work firsthand.

I thank my good friend David Bateson from Wynnum Business for putting Makeables in touch with Little Images, a local childcare photography business. Owner Leigh Farley says Makeables employees have done great work putting together a promotional mailout for Little Images.

Makeables employees folded letters and brochures for Little Images, and inserted them into a windowed envelope to be sent to prospective clients. They also included a chocolate drink so people could read over everything with a nice cup of hot chocolate!

I’m glad to have helped make this arrangement possible. I want to thank Multicap CEO Joanne Jessop for her time last week to discuss this, and also giving me a tour of their Eight Mile Plains facility where I got to meet more of their wonderful employees.

ADJOURNMENT: QUEENSLAND SMALL BUSINESS WEEK

It’s Queensland Small Business Week! I enjoy celebrating the achievements of small businesses in Bonner. Coming from a small business background myself, I also enjoy helping local small businesses grow and stay competitive.

Today I want to talk about how this Government is delivering for small business. I’d also like to shine a spotlight on local small businesses and small business groups I’ve worked with this year.

I thank the Government for extending the $20,000 instant asset write-off again. Over 3200 small businesses in Bonner have benefitted from this measure since it was first introduced. Small business owners have told me how helpful the instant asset write-off has been for them to purchase much-needed equipment.

We’re also continuing to cut red tape for small businesses and individuals, to the tune of $5.9 billion since 2013. The latest Annual Regulatory Reform Agenda report shows the regulatory burden on business was reduced by over $800 million from 1 January 2016 to 30 June 2017.

I’ve been pleased to share this great news with small businesses all across Bonner.

The 2018 Brisbane Small Business Expo recently rolled through Mt Gravatt. There were over 230 trade tables showcasing small businesses from across the Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Logan regions. It was great to have the Small Business Minister there. We chatted with hard-working small business owners who told us how our measures have helped them.

I’m proud to have helped bring the Expo to Brisbane for the first time in its seven year history. It was great to have an event like this in Bonner that recognises the outstanding contribution small businesses make to our community, and gives them the opportunity to network and learn other ways to bolster their business. Thanks to Expo organiser Paula Brand for her hard work making this happen.

I’ve also shared the good Budget news with local small businesses all over Bonner. In the last few months, I’ve been on almost ten small business walks. These walks are some of my favourite ways to engage with the local business community. I’ve been everywhere from the Wynnum CBD and Mayfair Village, to the strips and plazas along Logan Road in Mt Gravatt, going shop to shop chatting with small business owners about what matters to them most.

It’s been great chatting with the hard workers at Stavlos Barn Deli Café in Belmont, at Rod’s Meatery at the Gumdale shops on New Cleveland Road, at the Move Podiatry Clinic in Manly, at the Flour Monkey Bakery in Carina, at Gilmour’s Comfort Shoes at Palmdale Shopping Centre in Upper Mount Gravatt, and so many more.

I’m proud to be part of a Government that is backing these small businesses. The Coalition will always support small business to grow and create more jobs. We understand that when small businesses are given room to grow, employ more people and pay them better wages, we all benefit.

I look forward to delivering more for the small businesses of Bonner. I’m looking forward to returning home and hitting the pavement again to talk to more small business owners about what this Government can do for them.

BRISBANE SMALL BUSINESS EXPO DRAWS HUNDREDS IN MT GRAVATT

The Brisbane Small Business Expo held in Mt Gravatt today was a huge success, with over 1000 people attending, and over 230 exhibitors showcasing small businesses from across the Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Logan regions.

Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta, who attended with Minister for Small Business the Hon Craig Laundy, said he was proud to have helped bring the Expo to Brisbane for the first time in its seven year history.

“It’s great to have an event like this in Bonner that recognises the outstanding contribution small businesses make to our community, and gives them the opportunity to network and learn other ways to bolster their business,” Mr Vasta said.

“I’m glad to have the Small Business Minister here with me to chat with hard-working small business owners and hear their thoughts on the recent Budget.”

Organiser Paula Brand from Small Business Expos said the event wouldn’t have been possible without Mr Vasta and thanked him for his help.

“The Expo is amazing for businesses and it’s great to have it all happening right in our own backyard,” Mrs Brand said.

Mrs Brand said she hoped to bring the Expo back to the Brisbane region next year, and thanked local businesses for their support.

90 SECOND STATEMENT: SMALL BUSINESS EXPO

The Small Business Expo has had a great run on the Gold Coast and in Logan over the last six years. Now for the first time the Expo will be coming to Brisbane on Friday, May 4th, and I’m thrilled to say the organisers have chosen the Hibiscus Sports Complex at Upper Mt Gravatt as its venue.

I asked organiser Paula Brand to bring the Expo to Upper Mt Gravatt and I’m thrilled she agreed. The Expo is a great opportunity for small businesses in the area, particularly those that don’t have a storefront, to book a trade table where they can showcase their products and services.

There’ll be over 200 trade tables on the day featuring businesses from across the region. Registrations for trade tables are open now and I invite Brisbane businesses to contact my office for further information.

Over 600 small business owners are expected to attend the Expo. It’s a great networking opportunity. Attendees will also be able to learn the latest business tips and industry insight to help bolster their business, with five speaker presentations from some of Australia’s leading business experts including local success story, Phillip Di Bella from Di Bella Coffee, and Glen Richards from Network Ten’s popular Shark Tank Show.

I’ve also secured a very special guest to open the Small Business Expo: the Minister for Small Business. I thank him for his support and I can’t wait to see everyone at the Expo in May.

BLACKSMITH SPECIALTY COFFEE CHOSEN FOR BEST SMALL BUSINESS

Blacksmith Specialty Coffee in Mt Gravatt East is Bonner’s small business of the year, Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta announced today.

“In the spirit of supporting our local small businesses this Christmas, I recently put out a call for people to nominate one small business in their area that they love and to tell me why,” Mr Vasta said.

“It was great to receive so many messages of support for local businesses, and one stood out above the rest.”

Mt Gravatt East local Gemma Blaney picked Blacksmith as her favourite local business for its friendly staff and affordable and delicious food and coffee.

“Blacksmith has really livened up the street in which they’re located and I think this is great for the local community,” Ms Blaney said.

Ms Blaney received a $150 voucher from Mr Vasta to spend locally this Christmas.

“Thanks to everyone who sent in a nomination in support of their favourite local small business,” Mr Vasta said.

“I can’t wait to drop by Blacksmith for a visit and to meet the wonderful staff who work there.”

“Don’t forget to shop local this holiday season, your support makes all the difference.”

OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL BUSINESS TO WORK WITH DEFENCE

Local small business owners learned how they can win a contract as part of the Federal Government’s $200 billion Integrated Investment Program, during a Defence Industry Forum hosted yesterday by Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta MP.

“The Government has allocated $200 billion over the next 10 years to build up our Defence Force capability and grow our local defence industry,” Mr Vasta said.

“This is a great opportunity for small and medium businesses to enter the defence market and help create more jobs and grow our local economy.”

Mr Rodney Love, business adviser from the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC), shared advice for business owners looking to start out in defence, and the services available to help them in the process.

“You need to be able to provide a service or product that can meet the Defence Department’s current or future needs. You must also make sure your company fully complies with the Department’s standards and tender process,” Mr Love said.

Mr Love encouraged interested business owners to contact the CDIC for further information.

“The CDIC provides frank and fearless advice about whether expanding into defence would be appropriate for you, and the best defence opportunities available to you,” Mr Love said.

Mr David Briggs, Chief Risk Officer from NIOA, and Mr Terry Waterson, Operations Manager from BMD Constructions, shared their advice on winning a contract with Defence.

“You have to offer the best product for the best value. Most importantly, you have to be prepared to lose a tender,” Mr Briggs said.

“The CDIC will let you know straight up if your product is suitable for Defence, or how you can alter it to suit Defence’s needs.”

Mr Waterson said businesses should do their research on what work Defence is doing or has coming up.

“Find out about opportunities early on and pre-prepare. Don’t start the application process when a tender opens—know about the tender beforehand so you have more time to put forward the best application possible,” Mr Waterson said.

For more information on working with Defence and current opportunities available, visit the CDIC website.

GRIEVANCE DEBATE: COST OF LIVING

I want to talk about an issue that, without fail, tops the list of concerns of my constituents. At my regular mobile offices, in my community surveys, and when I’m out and about in the community, people continue to raise with me one issue above all else. I’m sure it’s the same for most of my colleagues. That issue, of course, is cost of living.

Residents are telling me it’s getting harder to pay the bills. Small business owners are struggling with rising power prices. Families are finding it harder to cope with childcare fees. And there’s the often debilitating cost of housing—parents and even grandparents are coming to me worried about their children’s ability to afford their first home.

The Coalition went to the last election with a promise to tackle cost of living pressures for households, families, and businesses. We’re continuing to deliver on this commitment and I’m pleased to say this is being reflected in the feedback I’ve been getting from people in the community.

Take power prices. Recent figures from the Australian Energy Regulator show over 460 Queenslanders a week are having their electricity disconnected, a huge jump from last year. And it’s no wonder, with record increases in wholesale electricity prices under the state Labor government flowing through to households and businesses.

At one of my recent community forums, a local from Carindale, Michael Sinitsky, told me that ahead of all the other issues dominating the headlines at the moment, the cost of power is the number one problem that needs addressing. When he’s chatting with friends, family, neighbours and others in the community about issues the government should be focussing on, it’s power prices that dominate the conversation.

It’s great to be able tell Michael and other locals about how the Turnbull Coalition Government has taken decisive action to put downward pressure on power bills. We’re getting on with the job of building Snowy Hydro 2.0. We’ve announced tough new regulations ensuring the gas sector will put Australian businesses and consumers first when it comes to our gas supply. And we’ve delivered the Energy Assistance Payment that will benefit over 21,000 people in Bonner.

More recently, we’ve secured the agreement of our largest energy retailers to implement a number of immediate and ongoing changes. Thanks to this Government’s efforts, the retailers have committed to contacting up to two million Australian households to let them know how they can get better, cheaper deals on their power bills.

We’ve also promoted the Australian Energy Regulator’s comparison website, Energy Made Easy. This site lets households plug in their relevant data to find a better power deal for themselves. Over 300,000 Australians have used Energy Made Easy to check that they're on the best energy plan available to them, potentially saving themselves hundreds of dollars a year.

We’ve also presented legislation to stop electricity networks from gaming the system to boost their profits. It’s a shame that instead of supporting these measures in the Senate that will give families relief from rising power prices, Labor has instead chosen to play politics and referred the legislation to a Senate committee.

The Coalition’s energy policies will benefit not only householders but small businesses as well. It’s so important to support the engine room of our economy—small business employs more than half the Australian workforce after all. As a former small business owner, I know how every dollar counts toward the bottom line. The skyrocketing power prices Queensland’s seen under Labor has meant that instead of being able to employ extra staff or invest in new equipment, small business owners have had to spend more and more to cover their power bills.

Now I’m glad to say our energy policies are paying off for small business. I’m also hearing from more business owners about how our measures designed to back small business are helping them with their day-to-day expenses.

Take Little Gnome, located in the heart of Wynnum CBD. Little Gnome is a bookshop and café run by mother and son duo, Bel and Jack Ellis. It’s a great example of a small business that has taken advantage of the Coalition Government’s small business incentives and programs to their full benefit.

Bel tells me our cut to the small business company tax rate was a welcome sight. It allowed Little Gnome to reinvest in new equipment and technologies. She says it’s also helped them employ extra staff when needed. And she’s just one of many local business owners who’ve told me the small business tax rate reduction has helped them expand and hire more people.

Bel also praised our decision to extend the $20,000 instant asset-write off threshold. Small businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million can now claim a deduction for the business portion of each new or second-hand asset they purchase costing less than $20,000 until June 30th next year—an added bonus to our small business tax cuts, as Bel calls it!

When Little Gnome was starting out, Bel tells me the most valuable tool they had at their disposal was the Federal Government’s small business information portal at business.gov.au. It answered many of their obscure questions on finance, tax, GST, and more.

The Government has also made available to small business owners low-cost business advice through our Australian Small Business Advisory Services Programme. The local provider in my electorate is the Greater Brisbane Small Business Advisory Services—can I just say Alice Langford, Tony Curl, and the rest of the GBSBAS are doing a fantastic job.

The Coalition will always have the back of small business to find and achieve savings wherever possible. We understand that when small businesses are given room to grow, employ more people and pay them better wages, we all benefit.

This is plain to see in the latest National Accounts data. Business conditions have risen to their highest level in almost a decade. Over 240,000 jobs were created in the last financial year alone, the strongest financial year jobs growth since the GFC. And wages are showing a modest but steady rise.

The Coalition is also supporting Australian families, not just with keeping their power bills down, but also with dealing with other cost of living pressures including housing affordability and childcare.

We’ve introduced legislation that lets young Australians save for their first home by building a deposit inside their superannuation. We’ve also boosted the availability of rental accommodation on the market with our foreign resident vacancy tax. And we’ve legislated the Jobs for Families Child Care Package, which is delivering more affordable and more accessible child care for over 10,200 families in Bonner alone.

For people in my electorate like Michael in Carindale, and Bel and Jack from Little Gnome, the Turnbull Coalition Government’s economic plan means better days ahead. Our plan is helping secure small business while creating more and better paying jobs. Most importantly, our plan is putting downward pressure on rising living costs. These are the issues my constituents care about most, and I’m proud to say this Government is delivering for them.

POSITIVE CHANGES FOR BONNER SMALL BUSINESSES FROM JULY 1

Small businesses in Bonner are set for simpler Business Activity Statements (BAS) and an extension to the instant asset write-off programme thanks to positive changes in force from July 1, Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta said today.

“Local small businesses are set to benefit from simpler paperwork and yet another year to use the instant asset write-off,” Mr Vasta said.

Mr Vasta said the popular $20,000 instant asset write-off programme will run for another year thanks to an extension in the recent Federal Budget.

“I’ve heard from many local small business owners about how helpful the instant asset write-off is to purchase the new equipment they need to grow, and how it creates what small business calls a ‘chain reaction’ for staff and customers,” Mr Vasta said.

“We listened to that feedback and the Government extended the programme in the 2017-18 Budget. As a result, small businesses with a turnover up to $10 million can continue to purchase the equipment they need to grow up to $20,000 and write it off immediately.”

Mr Vasta said small business tax cuts – which were back-dated to 1 July 2016 so small business reaped the reward immediately – also made more small businesses eligible for the programme.

“We know turnover above $2 million doesn’t mean you’re a big business, so we have changed the definition to up to $10 million to help even more genuine small businesses grow.”

1 July 2017 also sees a tax cut for the large-employing medium-sized businesses with an annual turnover up to $25 million.

“Small businesses employ almost one in every two Australians in the workforce. Our changes back them to create even more jobs and keep our economy growing,” Mr Vasta said.
