VASTA TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA AT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta MP has been chosen to represent Australia at the 2019 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September.

Mr Vasta said the appointment to the UNGA was a great honour and he was very humbled to be chosen to represent Australia and vote on key international issues.

“The General Assembly is held in New York and is the main deliberative, policy-making and representative body of the UN,” Mr Vasta said.

“It’s where all Member States have equal representation – one nation, one vote, and decisions are made on important questions such as those on peace and security.

“All 193 Member States are represented in this forum and our aim is to discuss and work together on a wide range of international issues covered by the UN Charter, from development, peace and security, to international law.”

Mr Vasta said he looked forward to speaking on a number of issues during the General Assembly and being part of the decision-making process which ultimately affects the lives of millions of people throughout the world.

“Overall the UNGA goals are to attain peace, security and disarmament, along with supporting development, safeguarding human rights, protecting our environment and strengthening the United Nations,” Mr Vasta said.

“It is a tremendous honour to be chosen to represent our great nation and I look forward to sharing my journey with my constituents in Bonner.”
